Ingredients

Scale

Potatoes

  • 2 pounds Russet or Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks

Dairy and Fat

  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream or milk, warmed

Seasonings

  • 1 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Optional Add-Ins

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced (optional)
  • 1/4 cup shredded cheddar, parmesan, or cream cheese (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh herbs like chives, parsley, or thyme (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons crispy bacon bits, green onions, or sour cream (optional)

Instructions

  1. Choose and Prepare Your Potatoes: Start by selecting starchy potatoes such as Russets or Yukon Golds. Peel them thoroughly to remove all skin, then chop into uniform chunks to ensure even cooking.
  2. Boil Until Tender: Place the potato chunks in a large pot, cover with cold water, and add a pinch of salt. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat and cook for 15-20 minutes until the potatoes are fork-tender.
  3. Drain and Dry: Drain the potatoes well and return them to the hot pot, letting them sit for a minute or two. This step allows excess moisture to evaporate, preventing watery mashed potatoes.
  4. Mash with Butter and Cream: Using a potato masher or ricer, gently mash the potatoes. Gradually fold in softened butter and warmed heavy cream or milk until you reach a creamy consistency. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.
  5. Final Touches: Stir in any optional ingredients such as roasted garlic, cheese, or fresh herbs for added flavor. Serve immediately to enjoy the best texture and taste.

Notes

  • Use Russet or Yukon Gold potatoes for the best creamy texture and avoid gluey results.
  • Warm butter and cream before adding to keep potatoes hot and absorb flavors better.
  • Mash potatoes gently to prevent a gummy or dense texture.
  • Drain potatoes thoroughly to avoid watery mashed potatoes.
  • Season gradually and taste as you go for perfect flavor balance.
  • For the smoothest mash, consider using a ricer or food mill instead of a handheld masher.
