Homemade Peach Cobbler

Homemade Peach Cobbler is a classic Southern dessert featuring juicy, sweet peaches baked with a tender, buttery biscuit-like topping that’s soft inside and crisp around the edges. This easy-to-make dessert uses simple pantry staples and fresh peaches, making it perfect for family dinners, potlucks, or any sweet occasion. Its nostalgic flavor, customizable spices, and comforting texture make it a beloved crowd-pleaser.

Ingredients

Scale

Peach Filling

  • 68 ripe fresh peaches, peeled and sliced (about 6 cups)
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)

Cobbler Topping

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour blend for GF option)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces (or coconut oil for vegan)
  • 1/2 cup milk or buttermilk (or plant-based milk for dairy-free)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Peach Filling: Peel and slice the fresh peaches, then toss them in a mixing bowl with sugar, lemon juice, and optional cinnamon and nutmeg. Let the mixture sit for 10 minutes to draw out the natural juices, creating a syrupy base.
  2. Make the Cobbler Topping: In a separate bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Cut the cold butter into the dry ingredients using a pastry cutter or fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in milk or buttermilk gently until a soft dough forms that is easy to handle but not sticky.
  3. Assemble and Bake: Grease a baking dish and pour the peach filling evenly into it. Drop spoonfuls of the cobbler dough evenly over the fruit, allowing some peaches to peek through for a rustic look. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 40-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and cooked through.
  4. Cool and Serve: Let the cobbler cool for 10-15 minutes to thicken the juices and meld the flavors. Serve warm, optionally topped with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or a sprinkle of powdered sugar for an elevated dessert experience.

Notes

  • Use fully ripe, juicy peaches for the best flavor and natural sweetness.
  • Do not overmix the topping dough to keep it tender and flaky.
  • Keep butter cold until mixing for a flakier crust.
  • Start checking the cobbler at 35 minutes to prevent over-browning.
  • Allow the cobbler to rest after baking to let the juices settle for perfect texture.
