Ingredients

Scale

Meatballs

  • 1 lb ground meat (beef, pork, turkey, or a mix)
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/3 cup grated parmesan cheese
  • 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 2 tablespoons fresh herbs (parsley or basil), chopped
  • 1 large egg
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Casserole

  • 2 cups marinara sauce
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/3 cup grated parmesan cheese

Topping

  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 2 tablespoons grated parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Meatballs: Combine ground meat, breadcrumbs, grated parmesan, garlic, onion, fresh herbs, egg, salt, and pepper in a large bowl. Mix gently just until combined, then shape into evenly sized meatballs about 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter.
  2. Brown the Meatballs: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Brown the meatballs on all sides until golden, locking in flavor and helping them hold together while baking.
  3. Assemble the Casserole: Spread a thin layer of marinara sauce on the bottom of a baking dish. Arrange the browned meatballs evenly over the sauce. Pour the remaining marinara sauce over the meatballs, then sprinkle generously with shredded mozzarella and parmesan cheese.
  4. Add the Topping: Mix breadcrumbs with melted butter and parmesan cheese. Evenly scatter this mixture over the top of the casserole to create a crunchy, golden crust after baking.
  5. Bake Until Bubbling: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the casserole for 25 to 30 minutes or until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and the breadcrumb topping is golden brown.

Notes

  • Use freshly shredded mozzarella for better melting and flavor.
  • Handle the meat mixture gently to avoid dense, tough meatballs.
  • Browning meatballs before baking enhances flavor and texture.
  • If marinara sauce is watery, simmer it to thicken before using.
  • Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes after baking for easier serving.
