Mississippi Mud Pie

Mississippi Mud Pie is a rich and indulgent dessert featuring a crunchy chocolate cookie crust, layered with a fudgy, creamy chocolate filling and topped with luscious whipped cream. This Southern classic combines multiple textures and deep chocolate flavors, perfect for any occasion and easy to customize for dietary preferences.

Ingredients

Scale

Crust

  • 1 ½ cups Oreo cookies or chocolate cookies, crushed
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 tablespoons sugar

Chocolate Filling

  • 1 ½ cups semi-sweet chocolate chips or chopped chocolate
  • ¾ cup heavy cream (or use whipped topping)
  • 2 large eggs, at room temperature
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

Topping

  • 1 cup whipped cream or preferred creamy topping
  • Optional garnishes: chocolate shavings, crushed nuts, mini marshmallows, fresh raspberries or sliced strawberries

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Crust: Crush your chocolate cookies or Oreos into fine crumbs using a food processor or by hand with a rolling pin. Melt the butter and mix it with the crumbs and sugar until combined. Press this mixture firmly into the bottom and slightly up the sides of a pie dish to form an even base. Place in the refrigerator to set while preparing the filling.
  2. Make the Chocolate Filling: In a saucepan over low heat, melt the chocolate chips with heavy cream, stirring continuously until smooth and glossy. Remove from heat and whisk in the eggs, cocoa powder, vanilla extract, and salt until fully combined into a rich, fudgy ganache-like mixture.
  3. Assemble the Pie: Pour the chocolate filling over the chilled crust, smoothing out the surface with a spatula. Return the pie to the fridge and chill for at least four hours, or until the filling is firm and sliceable.
  4. Add the Topping: Before serving, spread or pipe whipped cream or your preferred topping over the set chocolate filling. For extra indulgence, garnish with chocolate shavings, crushed nuts, or mini marshmallows toasted lightly.

Notes

  • Use high-quality chocolate for a deeper, more satisfying flavor.
  • Chill the pie thoroughly to ensure clean slices and set filling.
  • A pinch of salt in the filling balances the sweetness and enhances chocolate flavors.
  • Press the crust crumbs firmly and evenly to prevent crumbling when sliced.
  • Bring eggs and cream to room temperature before mixing to avoid a grainy filling texture.
