Cake Ingredients

  • 1 cup freshly brewed strong coffee or espresso, cooled
  • 1 cup granulated sugar, divided
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Caramel Sauce

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter

Garnishes (Optional)

  • Coffee powder, for dusting
  • Chocolate shavings
  • Crushed caramel candies
  • Sea salt for sprinkling

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Coffee: Brew a strong cup of coffee or espresso and let it cool to room temperature. This will infuse the cake with a rich coffee aroma.
  2. Make the Cake Batter: Cream the softened butter and half of the granulated sugar together until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs one at a time, then stir in vanilla extract. Gradually alternate adding the all-purpose flour (combined with baking powder and salt) and the cooled coffee, mixing gently to keep the batter airy and smooth.
  3. Bake the Cake: Pour the batter into a greased cake pan. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30 to 35 minutes. Check doneness by inserting a toothpick into the center — it should come out clean or with a few moist crumbs. Remove from oven and let cool completely.
  4. Prepare the Caramel Sauce: In a saucepan over medium heat, gradually melt the remaining sugar until it turns a golden amber color. Carefully add the heavy cream and butter, whisking continuously to combine and create a shiny, creamy caramel sauce. Remove from heat.
  5. Assemble and Glaze: Once the cake is completely cooled, pour the warm caramel sauce evenly over the top, allowing it to drip down the sides. Lightly dust the cake with coffee powder for an elegant finishing touch. Add optional garnishes if desired.

Notes

  • Use fresh coffee: Brew your coffee fresh to preserve the full flavor intensity.
  • Don’t overmix: Gently fold ingredients to maintain lightness in the batter.
  • Caramel care: Keep an eye on your caramel as it cooks to prevent burning and bitterness.
  • Room temperature ingredients: Ensure butter and eggs are at room temperature for smooth mixing.
  • Cool before glazing: Let the cake cool completely to avoid melting the caramel glaze.
