Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup maple syrup
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Brown Butter Icing

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: Whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt in a bowl. In a separate large bowl, cream the softened unsalted butter with granulated sugar and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Add the egg, maple syrup, and vanilla extract and mix until fully combined. Gradually fold in the dry ingredients until a soft dough forms.
  2. Shape and Bake: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Drop tablespoon-sized portions of dough onto a parchment-lined baking sheet about 2 inches apart, using a cookie scoop or spoon. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the edges are just set and the centers remain soft. Remove from oven and cool completely on a wire rack before icing.
  3. Make the Brown Butter Icing: Melt unsalted butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Continue cooking and swirling the pan until the butter turns golden brown and emits a nutty aroma, watching carefully to avoid burning. Remove from heat and cool slightly. Whisk powdered sugar with the browned butter, a pinch of salt, and maple syrup until smooth and spreadable.
  4. Ice the Cookies: Once cookies are completely cooled, spread or drizzle the brown butter icing generously over each cookie. Allow the icing to set slightly before serving for the best texture and flavor.

Notes

  • Use room temperature butter to ensure the sugars cream properly and yield fluffier cookies.
  • Do not overbake; removing cookies when edges are set helps maintain softness.
  • Brown the butter carefully, stirring continuously to prevent burning.
  • Cool cookies completely before icing to avoid runny glaze.
  • Store cookies in an airtight container to keep them fresh and soft for days.
